End Load Test Methodology

ISO 3723 specifies a compressive end load test that simulates the axial force exerted on a filter element by differential pressure in an outside-in flow configuration. The element is mounted in a test fixture and subjected to increasing axial compressive load until structural failure occurs. The load at failure is the collapse end load, which is correlated to the collapse pressure rating for a given element diameter and end cap geometry. Elements are qualified against minimum collapse end load values that provide a defined safety margin above the system bypass valve opening pressure.

Collapse Prevention Engineering

Filter element collapse is a catastrophic failure mode: a collapsed element releases all accumulated contamination directly into the downstream circuit. The primary structural determinants of collapse resistance are: pleated media support layer construction (inner and outer support tubes), end cap bonding strength, and pleat geometry under compressive load. ELIMFILTERS NANOFORCE™ and SYNTRAX™ elements use steel inner and outer support cages with bonded end caps, achieving collapse load margins of 10–20× above typical bypass valve settings (3–6 bar).

Complementary Standards

ISO 3723 (end load/collapse) complements NFPA T2.14 (hydraulic collapse and burst pressure verification) and ISO 2941 (filter element structural integrity — collapse and burst test under internal pressure). Together these standards provide complete structural qualification for filter elements operating under both outside-in and inside-out flow regimes, covering the full range of collapse and burst failure modes encountered in hydraulic and lubrication system applications.

COMMON ENGINEERING MISTAKES

Confusing collapse pressure (structural failure) with bypass valve opening pressure (designed operating event). Collapse releases unfiltered fluid and captured contaminant into the system — bypass valve activation diverts flow around a blocked element without releasing contaminant.

Not testing under pulsed differential pressure conditions representative of cold-start and flow transients. ISO 3723 static end load tests qualify elements for sustained differential pressure — fatigue failure from cyclic loading is a separate qualification requirement.
