Test Code Scope
SAE J726 defines test procedures for measuring air cleaner element performance including: gravimetric filtration efficiency (mass of test dust retained per total dust injected, expressed as a percentage), intake restriction (differential pressure across the filter element at rated engine airflow), and dust holding capacity (grams of test dust at terminal restriction). The test uses SAE fine or coarse test dust (equivalent to ISO 12103-1 A2 Fine and A3 Medium grades).

Relationship to ISO 5011
SAE J726 and ISO 5011 address the same test objectives for air cleaner performance evaluation, with differences in detailed test conditions and reporting formats. ISO 5011 is the international reference cited in European and international OEM specifications; SAE J726 is the North American equivalent referenced in US and Canadian OEM applications. Filter manufacturers targeting global OEM supply require characterisation data against both standards. A filter element meeting SAE J726 performance thresholds will generally satisfy ISO 5011 efficiency requirements at equivalent test conditions.

Service Interval Implication
Dust holding capacity data from SAE J726 testing (grams at terminal restriction) is the primary input for service interval prediction models. Higher dust holding capacity at equivalent initial restriction means longer field service before restriction indicator activation. The progressive density gradient construction used in MACROCORE™ elements maximises SAE J726 dust holding capacity at the specified terminal restriction limit.
