ISO 5011 vs. SAE J726 Air Filter Test Standards
International vs. North American test codes for engine air intake filter element performance
ENGINEERING OBJECTIVE
Identify which air filter test standard applies to a filter element specification or performance claim, and understand what performance metrics each standard produces.
COMPARISON SCOPE
Covers ISO 5011:2020 and SAE J726 (current revision) for internal combustion engine air intake filter elements. Does not cover cabin air filter standards (ISO 11155, ISO 29463) or compressed air filter standards (ISO 8573).
GOVERNING STANDARDS
OPTION DEFINITIONS
The internationally harmonised test standard for air intake filter elements used in internal combustion engines, compressors, and similar applications. ISO 5011 specifies the test dust (ISO 12103-1 A2 fine test dust), test rig geometry, airflow conditions, and reporting requirements. Key outputs: initial restriction (kPa), final restriction at terminal ΔP, gravimetric efficiency (%), and dust holding capacity (g). Used globally by European OEMs and increasingly adopted for all international procurement.
ADVANTAGES
LIMITATIONS
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
The Society of Automotive Engineers test code for air cleaner element performance, primarily used in North American engine and vehicle specifications. SAE J726 defines test procedures using AC coarse test dust (or equivalent), measuring restriction, efficiency, and capacity. Historically the dominant standard for North American OEM specifications (John Deere, Caterpillar, Cummins, Navistar). SAE J726 results are expressed as arrestance (%) for gravimetric efficiency and restriction (in. H₂O or kPa) for pressure drop.

ENGINEERING COMPARISON MATRIX
| DIMENSION | A — ISO 5011:2020 | B — SAE J726 |
|---|---|---|
Test dust | ISO 12103-1 A2 fine (precisely characterised) | AC fine/coarse (variable batch-to-batch) |
Efficiency metric | Gravimetric efficiency % + particle size efficiency | Arrestance % (gravimetric only) |
Capacity metric | DHC in grams — ISO 3724 service interval input | Dust capacity in grams (not directly ISO 3724 compatible) |
Restriction metric | kPa at stated flow rate | in. H₂O or kPa — dual unit legacy |
Geographic adoption | Europe, Asia, international procurement | North America — OEM legacy specifications |
Harmonisation status | Active ISO standard (2020 revision) | SAE document — no formal ISO alignment |
Reproducibility | High — A2 dust tightly specified | Moderate — AC dust particle size varies by lot |
