Historical Context
Before ISO 11171, particle counters were calibrated using AC fine test dust — a natural mineral dust with variable optical properties. Different instruments calibrated with AC fine test dust gave inconsistent results at the same actual particle size. ISO 11171 PSL calibration eliminated this variability, enabling valid comparison of particle count data across instruments, laboratories, and manufacturers. The transition from β to β(c) notation reflects this change.
