Scope and Background

DIN 71220 specifies particle filtration efficiency (>80%), odour removal performance, and activated carbon layer testing for road vehicle cabin air filters. Published by DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung), it preceded ISO 11155 and remains cited in European OEM supplier qualification documents — particularly in German automotive, bus, and truck supply chains — where legacy specifications have not been updated to ISO 11155 equivalents. The standard covers the same vehicle scope as ISO 11155: passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, buses, and trucks.

Relationship to ISO 11155

ISO 11155-1 particle efficiency and flow resistance methodology builds directly on the DIN 71220 framework with internationally standardised test conditions. In practice, a cabin filter that passes ISO 11155-1 will generally satisfy DIN 71220 particle efficiency requirements. However, formal DIN 71220 testing may be required separately for OEM qualification where German OEM specifications continue to cite DIN 71220 alongside or in place of ISO 11155. Dual-standard compliance is required for European market cabin filter products targeting German OEM supply chains.

COMMON ENGINEERING MISTAKES

Treating DIN 71220 and ISO 11155 as fully interchangeable specifications. Test dust concentrations and efficiency measurement conditions differ between the two standards — a filter qualifying under one may not meet the other.

Applying automotive passenger vehicle cabin filter change intervals (typically 15,000–25,000 km) to construction or agricultural equipment where ambient dust concentrations are 10–100× higher than road vehicle conditions.

ENGINEERING REFERENCES

STANDARD

DIN 71220, Kraftfahrzeuge — Innenraumluftfilter — Anforderungen und Prüfung (Road Vehicles — Cabin Air Filters — Requirements and Testing), Deutsches Institut für Normung

Primary German standard for cabin air filter performance; predecessor to ISO 11155; still required for European automotive OEM supply chain qualification in German and German-affiliated vehicle manufacturing.

STANDARD

ISO 11155-1:2001, Road Vehicles — Air Filters for Passenger Compartments — Part 1: Test for Particulate Filtration, ISO Geneva

International successor to DIN 71220 for particle filtration performance; defines PM10 and PM2.5 efficiency measurement methodology applicable alongside DIN 71220 for dual-standard OEM qualification.

STANDARD

ISO 11155-2:2009, Road Vehicles — Air Filters for Passenger Compartments — Part 2: Test for Gaseous Filtration, ISO Geneva

Companion standard to ISO 11155-1 for gaseous contaminant removal; equivalent to the gas phase component of DIN 71220 for activated carbon cabin air filter qualification.

STANDARD

ISO 29463-1:2011, High-Efficiency Filters and Filter Media — Classification, Performance Testing and Marking, ISO Geneva

Higher-performance HEPA classification standard applied when DIN 71220 minimum thresholds are insufficient for occupational health protection in mining and construction environments requiring ≥99.95% PM efficiency.
